Company History

Albury Galvanizing was founded in 1995 by then 140-year-old Shepparton Engineering Company J Furphy and Sons, under the guidance of Andrew Furphy, with a simple goal in mind, to provide the highest quality products and services to our customers in this region. Over the years, we have worked tirelessly to build a reputation for excellence, and today we are proud to be recognised as one of the leading companies in our industry.

Our journey began with just a handful of employees and a 6.7m long bath, small by today’s standards. Despite our humble beginnings, we were determined to make a mark in the industry, and we quickly got to work building our brand and expanding our offerings throughout Albury Wodonga, Northeast Victoria, Riverina, Young and Canberra.

2003 – In December, Albury Galvanizing replaced its first bath. The new bath was 200mm deeper than the first and was fitted with state-of-the-art gas burners improving efficiency and reducing maintenance costs. It was fabricated by our parent company J Furphy & Sons at Shepparton.

In 2004 Albury Galvanizing won its first industry award, Winning the Galvanizers Association of Australia’s Sorel Award for industry achievement. Plant Manager Tilo Schmidt said the Jindera-based plant has been working on refining its zinc reclaiming and recycling systems in line with the Environment Management Systems and Cleaner Production programmes. Judges were impressed by the entry’s commitment to sustainable development in resource usage, including environmental management, cleaner production, with a high regard for safety.

In those early years, we focused primarily on growth through customer service and team spirit. At our 10th anniversary in 2005, Then General Manager Tilo Schmidt is quoted as saying to the Border Morning Mail, “We are committed to meeting our customer's needs and try to practice this daily”. This would set us apart from the competition. Our tireless efforts paid off, and our business quickly gained a reputation for its quality, reliability, and quick turnaround.

As our customer base grew, we committed to re-investing in the business. Therefore, we expanded our operations in 2012 by commissioning a Brand-New Plant and Offices. The new plant was bigger on all counts. This was our 3rd bath and increased in size from 6.7m, installing a 9.5m long x 2.6m deep x 1.5m wide. This size allowed for double dipping of structures up to 16m in length. Our pre-treatment capacity and cranes also increased. This project represented a significant investment in the region, and it allowed us to provide our customers with an increased and improved service.
